Have you noticed how your life can change in a single moment? And later, how, we are eternally grateful that it did.
You don’t need to wait until Thanksgiving to show our thanks and gratitude. There are significant benefits to demonstrating gratitude every day. It doesn’t matter if it is for something small, or something that changes your life forever.
Like the day I met Coach.
My life changed forever my Freshman year of high school. On that foggy morning more than 30 years ago, I stepped onto the soccer field of my high school in Northern California. Little did I know that the man who asked us to call him “Coach”, would become the father figure I needed – after losing my adoptive dad when I was seven.
Over the course of that season, Coach saw my potential as a player, pushing me to be better. But more importantly, he saw my potential as a person, more than I ever saw in myself. For all of us on the team, he made soccer a way of life for us, emphasizing the balance of our responsibilities as an individual in the game, and how we use that to move forward as a team.
In doing so, Coach and his family became central figures in my life. He walked me down the aisle when I got married. He cheered me on when I graduated from college, and then later from law school. Coach became known as “Grandpa Coach” in our family and he even acted as my birthing coach when Tate was born
Our lives are forever entwined and made better because of it.
Every day, I am grateful to Coach for what he saw in me that day on the field and all the days that followed.
Don’t wait to tell people you’re grateful for them. Expressing gratitude and giving thanks has been proven to improve your life, not to mention the lives of the people you are recognizing.
Research has shown it can lead to increased balance, happiness, sleep, and more. We all should be expressing gratitude and appreciation every day.
And to the coaches, who recognize something powerful in the kids they are helping – you have the power to change lives.
And for that, I will be forever grateful.
